How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Bathroom tiling is a ceramic coating that is attached to the walls to perform a triple function: protecting them from moisture, decorating and warming. It consists of ceramic tiles bonded with special adhesives. The joints between the tiles of the cladding are filled with a special paste.

The average price for cladding a bathroom of 4 m2 (2 x 2 m, wall height: 2.20 m) with ceramic tiles made of medium-quality red paste, including installation, grout and cleaning, is 830 euros.

Types of tiles

The tiles used to tile bathrooms have different qualities and formats. They are usually classified and selected depending on the material and technique with which they are made. The quality levels of each part are set at different scales:

MOHS Scale: Shows hardness and scratch resistance. It ranges from 1 (least durable) to 10 (most durable).

PEI code: indicates in which rooms ceramics should be used, depending on their wear resistance. Types:

  • PEI I: for very light use, indoors without outside access.
  • PEI II: Easy to use, indoors, not close to outdoor.
  • PEI III: average usage, internal environment bordering on external.
  • PE IV: intensive use, indoors and outdoors in public buildings or in areas with heavy traffic.
  • PEI V: very intensive use, they are resistant even to chemicals.

Pressed cement tiles without firing in a hydraulic press

From 1 to 6 colors.

The more colors, the higher the price

Hardness: 7 (on the Mohs scale)

DRINK III

Mainly for floors, but they are also used on walls

For bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens

Formats: square, rectangular and hexagonal. Very different sizes

They are also custom-made.

Installation

The whole process takes 2 days. On the first day, the tiles are cleaned and removed, and the walls are leveled, allowing them to dry. The tile is laid the next day. After the cement dries, the seams are filled, and then cleaning begins. Final cleaning may be required, which will be carried out on the third day.

When the bathroom is tiled, the floor and plumbing are usually also laid. These works are performed during the drying of the walls and cement. In general, a bathroom overhaul usually takes a total of 5 days.

Price

The average cost of cladding a bathroom with an area of 4 m2 includes the following materials:

  • Ceramic coating
    • Tile: 120 euros.
    • Porcelain stoneware: 220 euros.
    • Porcelain stoneware: 270 euros.
    • Sandstone: 360 euros.
    • Hydraulic tiles in 2 colors: 900 euros.
  • Cement-glue: 50 kg for 12 euros.
  • Joint paste: 16 kg for 10 euros.

The work includes tile cutting and wall leveling (15 euros/m2, total 270 euros), tile and grout (15 euros/m2, total 270 euros). The cost of work on bathroom tiling will be 540 euros.

If it is necessary to remove the original tile, the price will be added to the work on grinding the tile, removing sediment from the official landfill and leveling the walls. The average price for a bathroom of 4 m2 is 255 euros.

Extras

Tiled shower cabins/baths

If we want to remove the bathtub or shower tray and install a working shower at floor level, it is necessary to remove the existing plumbing, clean, adjust the plumbing, install a non-slip tray for mineral fillers and tile the walls. The cost of tiling a shower/bathtub is from 665 euros and above.

To this cost should be added the cost of a mixer (from 7 euros for a mixer and 28 euros for a shower set) and the cost of a partition (from 115 euros).

Floor screed

Laying a traditional porcelain tile floor in a 2x2 bathroom will cost about 100-150 euros with installation. If the initial soil is sealed, the cost will be about 200-300 euros.

Baseboard

If the bathroom is not tiled, but painted, then it will be necessary to install a skirting board when laying a ceramic floor. The cost of the skirting board is included in the total cost of the floor. A 4 m2 solar covering with granite and baseboards is sold for about 150 euros. If we want to install only a skirting board or install a skirting board other than the floor, we must choose a skirting board made of moisture-resistant material (ceramic or PVC). Installation of 9 m linear PVC skirting boards (material and workmanship) will cost about 44 euros, from porcelain stoneware-from 50 euros.

Plumbing is another important part of bathroom reform. This is the last thing that fits when the wall and floor cladding is already finished. In a medium-sized bathroom, mandatory elements are a sink (with faucets, fittings and a mirror, about 200 euros), a toilet (about 120 euros) and a shower cabin with a partition and faucets (about 300 euros). You can also evaluate the inclusion of a bidet (about 100 euros with a faucet)or installing a bathtub (about 150 euros) instead of a shower.

What else should I pay attention to?

  • If we decide to buy tiles ourselves, we must purchase 10% more of the amount needed to cover the walls. This remainder will be used to replace parts that break during installation and to cover possible malfunctions.
  • In this regard, it is also recommended to mix parts from different boxes when tiling; this way possible differences in the color of the tile or tile will be compensated.
  • If we are going to lay the tiles ourselves, we must take into account the absorption coefficient of the ceramics in order to choose the appropriate cement adhesive or glue. In these cases, you should consult with the seller or the manager of the store or warehouse.
  • If the installation is carried out in the summer, it is advisable to wet the wall with a spray gun so that the solution does not dry out too quickly.
  • Tiles can also be used to decorate the walls of living rooms and entrances. It can be laid from floor to ceiling or in the form of a skirting board, that is, only the lower part of the wall (up to a height of about 120 cm) can be lined, and the upper part left painted or papered.
  • To reduce costs and create a more modern effect, the lower part of the wall can be tiled at a height of 1.10–1.20 m, and the upper part can be painted with special plastic paint for wet rooms. The shower/bath area should be tiled from floor to ceiling.
